Combat

The Combat tutorial begins with a short cutscene, where the player is asked to attack some training dummies. There are two beginner weapons, a sword and a crossbow. The beginning tutorial will allow the player to use both and then choose one to keep. Both weapons have their own pros and cons, and the player should choose the weapon they found to be easiest for them.

Weapons

Crossbows (ranged)

Crossbows are generally considered to be more beginner-friendly, as they allow the player to attack various monsters from a safe distance. Dealing damage from a distance allows the player more time to react to enemy attacks and learn their moves, while keeping danger to a minimum and their own health high.

Crossbows have unlimited ammo, so the player does not have to concern themselves with making sure they stay stocked with arrows. Aiming the crossbow is done with the mouse, not necessarily the direction the player is facing. The player is able to deal constant damage with crossbow attacks since the crossbow doesn't require the player to reload bolts and will continue to fire as long as the LMB (default) is held down. This means crossbows sacrifice burst damage to have consistent damage.

An effective technique, while fighting with a ranged weapon, is kiting the enemy. Kiting means the player keeps their enemies in range of their own attacks, while staying out of range of the monsters attacks. Generally the player will want to engage the enemy from as far as possible, giving the player more time before they must move and circle the enemies to minimize damage. Using Air Skip is very helpful for getting back out of range for enemies that have gotten too close.

Swords (melee)

Swords require the player to be much closer to monsters while fighting. They generally deal more damage than their crossbow counter parts

The kiting technique is possible while using a melee weapon, as the melee weapon range has more range that most monster attacks, although much more difficult. The player is still able to back up while staying out of the enemies range, but keeping them in range of the sword.

Magic

All magic uses mana as a resource, offensive spells are no different. Offensive magic spells are unlocked in the skill tree, generally on the top row. It is recommended the player stock up on various mana restoring foods and potions if they are going to use magic as their prime damage-dealing weapon. Ensure to eat as many consumables that increase the players mana pool as possible, so the player does not run out of mana mid-battle.

Spells deal more overall damage than crossbows do, however some magic abilities have cooldowns. Magic does not cost money to upgrade, like physical weapons do, as the player grows in their combat skill and eats various consumables that increase the players mana pool and spell power, their abilities will grow and potentially surpass the damage ability of physical weapons.

Similar to fighting with a ranged weapon, kiting is an effective technique while fighting with magic.

Leveling and Skills

Experience Points

As the player fights various enemies, they will gain Combat Combat EXP.png towards the combat skill tree. Killing different monsters will provide the player with different experience points, depending on level of the monster. The monsters page will show the player a list of all known monsters, along with how many experience points the player will earn with their defeat.

Skill Tree

The top row is primarily focused on magic boosts and spells. The second row generally prioritizes melee and sword abilities and boosts. The third row concentrates on ranged and crossbow abilities. The fourth, and bottom, row offers various defensive buffs and boosts. Each tier requires five skill points before it will be unlocked, points do not have to be spent in the direct previous tier, but in the skill tree as a hole. For example, to unlock Tier V the player must have 25 points spread out between tiers I-IV, they can be spent in any of the rows or any of the columns.

If the player doesn't want to worry too much about the skill tree, or is feeling overwhelmed, the general advice is to put three points into their preferred weapon type (see above) and two points into the defensive boosts.

Recipe Unlock

Some recipes for items will unlock as the player progresses through the skill, and reaches a certain level of that skill.

Equipment

Armor

Armor is used to increase the players defense. Many of the armor items are crafted by the player at the anvil. Better armor, requires different combat skill levels in order to equip and use. To equip armor, open up the player inventory and drag the armor to the correct armor slot, ensuring it is not in the cosmetic slot as that will not provide the player with any stats.

Swords & Crossbows

Weapons are used to cause physical damage to enemies. As the player increases in combat level, the higher level gear the player can wear. Unlike armor, weapons do not have cosmetic choices.

Combat Dungeon

The Combat Dungeon is a gauntlet style challenge that not only tests the player's combat abilities, but also rewards the player with permanent, combat-enhancing items. The gauntlet is made up of 31 single-screen floors containing a static configuration of enemies/elite enemy for each different floor. Every 5th level the player will get a key to open the chests located in the staging room. The loot chests all contain various items which give the player a permanent combat bonus as soon as they pick them up, and can be safely discarded afterwards.

There are three achievements associated with beating various levels of the dungeon: 5, 15, and 30.

Boss Arena

The boss arena is located east of Lynn's House, before the player gets to the mine. The arena is available Tuesdays and Saturdays, the boss rotation is random. The player will enter the arena area and speak with Raimi to choose what level boss to fight. The boss of the day is the same regardless of the level. Once they have chosen the level of encounter, the player will be teleported into the area with the boss, and the battle begins immediately. Once the battle is over, the player will receive their loot from the event, and will need to speak with Raimi to leave.

The player is only able to fight one boss per day the event is available. They are unable to challenge different levels of the boss in the same day, they must wait until the boss comes up in rotation again.

There are several achievements associated with defeating each of the bosses at each of the challenge levels.
