The Beach BBQ takes place on the 28th of Summer. To attend this festival, the player must talk to Bernard in the town center any time after 12:00pm on the last day of Summer. Be sure to do any farming, general upkeep, or inventory emptying before taking to Bernard, as the player wont get a chance to do much after the festivities are over.
Once the player has talked to Bernard, he takes you over to the beach to join in the fun. The player then is able to buy some seasonal wares from the vendors, participate in the hot dog eating contest, and grab some ice cream. At the end of the day, the citizens of Sun Haven all gather for a firework display - then drop the player back off at their house at 11:00pm.
The Player gets two different mails regarding the Summer BBQ event, one on the 21st of Summer, and one on the 27th.

Hot Dog Eating Contest
Sign up for the contest with Bernard and compete to eat the most hot dogs. When the event starts, spam the item interaction key (Default: E). The player character will eat one hot dog for every key press.
