Walkthrough

Brave the Whirlpool

After the introduction to Karish, walk up to the whirlpool. Once the player has decided to jump into the whirlpool, two cut scenes will play back to back; one of the player jumping into the whirlpool, and one when the player reaches the deeps.

Eerie Welcoming

The Whirlpool
The player leaps into the whirlpool. Once the player is fully jumped into the whirlpool, Karish does a "!" animation and jumps into the whirlpool after the player.
Face Karish.png: Whoa, no way! You jumped right into the whirlpool and DIDN'T break every bone in your body! I don't even think you broke a SINGLE bone! When I'm wrong, I'm wrong - and I was wrong about you!
Now that you've survived the trip down, what do you have to say, huh?
Player: Blub... Blub...... Blub.
Player: MMM!!! MMMMMFF!!!
Face Karish.png: ...Huh? OH. Right. You probably don't know the trick to talking under water. Or breathing under water.[]Uh, hold on, air-sucker. I think I know what'll help...
Karish swims off to the right side of the screen, swimming out of view.
'...As you watch the fish-guy swim away, you begin to reflect on your life decisions. Maybe jumping into a whirlpool in the middle of the ocean was... a really stupid idea...[]...[]How long can you hold your breath for, anyways? Guess you're about to find out...[]One Sun Dragon... Two Sun Dragon... Three Sun Dragon... Four Sun Dragon...'
Karish swims back into the scene from the right, the player turns to face him
'Oh look! It's the fish-guy again. He's carrying something...'
Face Karish.png: Here you go! I found this in a sunken ship earlier. It should help...
How do you feel now, air-sucker?
Player: I can breathe! I can talk! I can siiing!
Face Karish.png: Maybe you should do a little less singing, though. The outer reefs are teeming with leviathans.[]...And dragonsharks.[]And giant squid.[]And mega urchins - those are the worst.[]Basically, there's lots of big stuff that will eat you out here if you don't pipe down!
Player: Oh, neat. I'm not LITERALLY DROWNING ANYMORE.
Face Karish.png: Don't get too comfortable, air-sucker. The outer reefs are teeming with leviathans.[]...And dragonsharks.[]And giant squid.[]And mega urchins - those are the worst. Those ones are the worst.[]Basically, there's lots of big stuff that will eat you out here.
Player:
Amari dialogue icon.png
I don't get it... I'm an aquatic Amari just like you. Why can't I breathe in the water?
Face Karish.png: You're not in the surface waters anymore, little fish. This is the deep water! You've lived your whole life on the surface, just look at those tiny little gills! Hehe, they're so small and useless. Look at them![]Down here, the pressure is so great that your little gills don't work very well. Which is too bad, because the outer reefs are teeming with leviathans.[]...And dragonsharks.[]And giant squid.[]And mega urchins - those are the worst.[]Basically, there's lots of big stuff that will eat you out here if you're too slow!
Player: Um, where exactly is this place?
Face Karish.png: You're in The Deep, as opposed to up where the seaweed grows. Right down this path is Brinestone Deeps, where I'm from.
Player: So, the whirlpool...
Face Karish.png: No one else in town was brave enough to help me investigate the whirlpool, so I had to handle it myself. I had no idea what I'd find at the top of it, but definitely wasn't a dry-lander who was ready to nosedive right into it like a LEGEND! Talk about an awesome dive!
Player: Is Brinestone Deeps a nice place?
Face Karish.png: Well, normally it's a great place. All sorts of action and exciting people. But... Just a couple of weeks ago, our leader accepted a New Advisor... Then our leader starts wearing this Weird Hat - pretty soon, lots of people are wearing them!
Player: What happened?
Face Karish.png: Everyone in town has gone crazy! Well, at least the ones who've put on the weird new hats. Plus, this whirlpool suddenly formed out nowhere! Something is definitely fishy, and it isn't all the fish.
Player: Like 'ha-ha' funny?
Face Karish.png: No, more like "everyone in town is going crazy and the end is nigh" funny. Because everyone in town is... going crazy. Well, at least the ones who've put on the weird new hats. Plus, this whirlpool suddenly forms outta nowhere! Something is definitely fishy, and it isn't all the fish.
Player: A new advisor... weird hats... people acting strangely...
Face Karish.png: And a magic whirlpool that connects to your house! No one else will believe me, but I'm sure that this advisor our leader hired is behind everything. He's a REAL weird looking guy, and he talks like... like... like some kind of evil, tentacle-y clown.
Player: That's all a lot to think about.
Player: It sounds like you're about two coral short of a reef, buddy.
Face Karish.png: Yeah, well-
Karish does an "!" emote and turns north.
Face Karish.png: Um, hold that thought!
Karish swims behind the rock. Several brain slugged NPCS walk into the scene from the north. They stop.
Player: Um... Hey there, guys...
File:Face NPC1.png: Who goes there? Who are you?
NPC 1 takes a step forward
Player: I'm, uh, just taking a swim.
NPC 2 takes a step forward
File:Face NPC2.png: Who were you talking to, swimmer?
Player: ...I was... just chatting to myself, actually...
Karish sighs with relief and swims away
Player: Oh, I was talking to this fish-guy! He's right over there, behind that rock!
Karish facepalms and swims quickly away
NPC 3 takes a step forward
File:Face NPC3.png: It's not safe out here, swimmer.[]Lots of things that will eat you up, swimmer.
Come with us, swimmer. You should meet Our Leader, swimmer.
File:Face NPC1.png: Yes, swimmer. That's a good idea. Come with us, swimmer. Follow, but don't get eaten.
Player: Um, alrighty.
The NPCs walk away, leaving to the north.

Even though the NPC's sound like they are going to escort the player, they aren't so the player must make their way to the Brinestone Mansion on their own. To do this, the player should head east, where there is a small outcropping of the cliff, the player is able to jump up it. The player will then head north up another cliff. Monsters will appear between the whirlpool entrance and the city of Brinestone Deeps. The player can fight them, or mount up and attempt to run past them.

Once the player gets to the gates of the city, they should continue north to reach the mansion. Once they reach the mansion, a cut scene will play.

1/24
File:Face NPC 1.png: Welcome, swimmer. You made it. Didn't get eaten, swimmer. That's good.
File:Face NPC 2.png: Boss wants to see you, swimmer. Go greet him. Don't keep him waiting, swimmer. Not a good idea. Not a good idea at all, swimmer.
Player: Where is your leader? How does he know I'm here?
the NPCs all turn north at the same time
File:Face NPC 3.png: Up there, swimmer. See?
Boss... Sees what we see, swimmer. Slimes show us all...
The camera pans across town, landing on the mayor's house. The camera pans back down to the player - the NPCs are now gone.
Player: Oh, yeah, I see the - OH JEEZ THEY'RE GONE
Player: H-hey, where did you guys go?!
Karish swims into the scene, landing next to the player
Face Karish.png: Hey! You made it into town.
Face Karish.png: If Player didn't blow his cover Thanks for not blowing my cover to those hat-wearing freaks back there.
Eh, well, I shouldn't call them 'freaks'. They were good fish, before they put those stupid hats on.
Face Karish.png: If player blew his cover Heeey, buddy! Thanks for TOTALLY BLOWING MY COVER to those hat-wearing freaks back there.
Eh, well, I shouldn't call them 'freaks'. They were good fish, before they put those stupid hats on.
Face Karish.png: So. What do you think so far? Does anything about this place seem a little 'off' to you?
Player: I admit something seems amiss.
Player: These place is giving me the creeps...
Face Karish.png: Look, I don't really know who you are, but I can admit when I need help - and I need help. If you're as brave as you are strong, then I think you should meet with Boss Jabbu. He's our leader![]Just... Don't trust anything anyone tells you, okay? Like a lot of other people around here, Boss Jabbu hasn't been acting right since he put on one of those weird slime hats. But you should see that for yourself![]Oh - the name is Karish, by the way.
Player: Thanks for the warning, Karish. I'm [Player].
Player: How can I trust that's your name after you just said not to trust anything anyone... Ah, forget it. What's up, Karish? I'm [Player].
Face Karish.png: [Player]? That's a good name. You head to Boss Jabbu's Headquarters - I've got some work I need to do in the meantime. We'll rendez-pew when we're both done with our missions!
Player: Let's go!
Player: Er, I think it's 'rendezvous'...
Karish swims off.

The player should continue north, to enter the throne room.

2/24
...Um, well. This is awkward.
...You're going to take a wild guess and assume the giant fish man is the so-called "Lord Jabbu" Maybe you should try to address him?''
Player: Greetings. I come from Sun Haven.
Face Advisor.png: CRIX'LIX VU'SHIA L'XQXRRRX![]...Ahem. Excuse me, I was... deep in thought. You're the idiot dry-lander my thralls found, yes? From Sun Haven, you said?
Player: Hey there guys. What's shakin'?
Face Advisor.png: CRIX'LIX VU'SHIA L'XQXRRRX![]...Ahem. Excuse me, I was... deep in thought. You're the idiot dry-lander my thralls found, yes? Nothing is 'shaking' around here - only important work. Who are you?
Player: I have come to conquer your town!
Face Advisor.png: CRIX'LIX VU'SHIA L'XQXRRRX![]...Ahem. Excuse me, I was... deep in thought. You're the idiot dry-lander my thralls found, yes? I doubt someone who can't even breath at this depth came to conquer anything. Why don't you tell me why you're really here?
Player: I see fish people.
Face Advisor.png: CRIX'LIX VU'SHIA L'XQXRRRX![]...Ahem. Excuse me, I was... deep in thought. You're the idiot dry-lander my thralls found, yes? This is an underwater city, you're going to see a lot of 'fish people'. Who are you?
Player: Your 'thralls'?
Face Advisor.png: Did I say 'thralls'? I meant 'pals'. Ah, but enough about that - who are you?
Player: I'm [Player].
Player: I'm... a farmer.
Face Advisor.png:
Demon dialogue icon.png
A Demon, are you? I would ask if you've come to return to the fold where you belong, but I'm sure your pathetic race has grown much too comfortable on this miserable planet. How did you come to us?
Face Advisor.png:
Angel dialogue icon.png
An Angel, are you? Are you winged fools still upset at what was taken from you? Or are you pious pigeons forgotten the Everbeyond's true masters? How did you come to us?
Face Advisor.png:
Elemental dialogue icon.png
An Elemental, are you? I never dreamed in my darkest dreams that I would have to host a child of the Everbeyond, though I'm sure you're too dim to understand my disgust. Make your words quick - how did you come to us?
Face Advisor.png:
Elf dialogue icon.png
Human dialogue icon.pngAmari dialogue icon.pngNaga dialogue icon.png And how did you come to us?
Player: I jumped into a whirlpool.
Face Advisor.png: Of course. So dry-landers have already discovered the whirlpool. How annoying. There's far too many of you on this world.
Player: I did the world's biggest belly flop.
Face Advisor.png: How amusing. Clearly you traveled through the whirlpool, which means dry-landers have already discovered it. How annoying. There's far too many dry-landers on this world.
Player: So, um...
Face Sally.png: Ugh! Would you guys BE QUIET?
The camera pans over to the child playing in the corner
Face Sally.png: I'm trying to do something important here!
Face Advisor.png: Jabbu, please tell your vile kin-spawn to behave itself.
Face Jabbu.png: SALLY... DEAR... PLEASE... OBEY.
Face Sally.png: Whatever, uncle Jabbu. I still liked you better before you got the weird slime hat, though. We've been sitting here since my parents dropped me off a WEEK ago! When are we going to go shell hunting like last year? Oh, and...
Face Advisor.png: I think that's enough incredibly obnoxious chatter. There will be plenty of time for pointless shell eating later on. Until then, children are meant to be silent. Correct, Jabbu?
Face Jabbu.png: ...SILENT. YES. CORRECT.
Face Sally.png: ...Whatever.
Face Advisor.png: I think this has been an invaluable meeting, don't you all agree? But as it stands, there is much work for us to focus on, so we must bid you farewell, revolting dry-lander.
Please, tell the filthy inhabitants of your pathetic little village that everything is fine. The whirlpool anomaly is under control.
The strange man flicks his hand through the water, like a silent command...
The guards quickly move from their positions, moving to stand directly in front of the player
Face Advisor.png: Men, please show our ugly guest out of the palace. They have a long trip back to their home.
The guards walk towards the player, sending the player walking backwards. The scene fades to black.
Face Advisor.png: Oh - and someone bar the door. I grow weary of all the distractions!
The scene fades back into the player standing outside of the mayor's house. Karish swims in and lands near the player. The player turns to face him.
Face Karish.png: So... Was it weird, or was it weird, [Player]?
Player: Okay, I admit. That was all pretty strange.
Player: I mean... I've seen weirder. But it was still fairly weird.
Face Karish.png: Yeah, see! I knew you'd see the truth.
Listen, XX, I believe the fate of Underbrine is at stake right now. There are nefarious plots at work, and I'm going to dismantle them. Will you help me?
Player: Of course I'll help you out.
Face Karish.png: Yes! I knew you'd agree to help me! We're going to team up and smash the bad guys and save the day! You and me!
Player: Are you SURE things are as bad as you think?
Face Karish.png: So you're a skeptic. Good! The world NEEDS skeptics! I can explain everything you need to know, don't worry!
Face Karish.png: ...But let's talk somewhere more private. I'm sort of wanted by the guards right now. We can't go back to my house, but I have a secret place where I can lay low and plan my next moves. Meet me there, and I'll explain everything I know.
Player: Well, where do I find your place?
Face Karish.png: Head South, back to the town square, with the giant shark statue? Then go South again, through the glass tunnel. From there, just go directly West!
You'll end up in a chasm, where my secret cave is. Meet me there, and I'll explain everything there is to explain, alright? I'll be waiting!

Hero Meeting

After being thrown out of the palace, Karish tells the player to meet him in his secret cave. From his instructions at the end of the previous cut scene, the player should head south from the mansion, then continue south from the giant shark statue in central Brinestone Deeps. Once the player has exited the city through the glass tunnel, they need to head West.

After a short confirmation that the player has made it to the right place, the player should go inside. This will trigger the next cutscene.

3/24
Face Karish.png: [Player]! You found my hideout just fine, right? You weren't followed? You ARE the real [Player], right? This isn't some trick?
Face Karish.png: Gah! I have to ask you something only the real [Player] would know!
Face Karish.png: Alright, [Player] - if that IS your real name...
...What's my favorite color?
Player: I-is it... Yellow?
Face Karish.png: No, it's whatever color my sharkskin is! What would say it is? Sky Blue? Cerulean? Whatever! It's my favorite, and you didn't guess it!
If you were one of 'them', you would have probably read my mind or zapped me with some sort of freaky heat vision or something.
Alright, you pass the ocular patdown. Let's talk plans, [Player]!
Player: Karish, I have no idea what your favorite color is.
Face Karish.png: Exactly! See, if you were one of 'them', you would have probably read my mind or zapped me with some sort of freaky heat vision or something.
Alright, you pass the ocular patdown. Let's talk plans, [Player]!
Player: So what's going on?
Face Karish.png: It's like I said. Something dark is happening in Brinestone Deeps. Ever since Boss Jabbu got his new advisor and everyone started wearing the Slime Hats.
Player: What's up with those freaky hats, anyways?
Face Karish.png: They showed up around the same time Boss Jabbu's advisor did. Local merchants started to sell them, and they instantly became a popular fashion statement - after all, Boss Jabbu himself wore one, so most folks were eager to follow suit!
Of course, not everyone wanted a slime hat of their own, and that's when the merchants started to get real pushy about selling their wares...
They even tried to get ME to put one on, but I knew better! I tried to warn everyone else, but... They wouldn't exactly believe me.
Player: Why not?
Karish turns south, doing the finger twiddle animation
Player: Heheh, I uhhh, well. I might have a bad habit of... falsely predicting bad things.
Face Karish.png: There was that one time, for instance...
Flashback begins - The scene fades in while panning down on town center, Karish is running into the town center, which is filled with several NPCs
Face Karish.png: Everyone, everyone!
Face Karish.png: There's a MASSIVE leviathan heading directly for town!
Face Karish.png: Don't worry, I shall meet it in combat, and...
File:Face Frightened Villager.png: LEVIATHAN?!
File:Face Fleeing Villager.png: It's every fish for himself! Run!!!
the NPCs all start to run off the scene, quickly
Face Karish.png: G-guys...
Fade to black, fade back into Karish's hideout. End flashback.
Face Karish.png: It turned out it was... Just a really big rock.
Heheh...
Player: So no one really trusts you, huh?
Face Karish.png: Sadly, no! When disaster truly did strike, no one would believe me! Trust me, I tried. Even when the guards threatened me to stop, I didn't! But everyone in town respects Boss Jabbu - he's the boss, after all. It was really hard to argue against his word.
Eventually, Boss Jabbu - well, actually, his "advisor" - ordered my arrest. I've been on the run ever since... Avoiding capture while also trying to piece together what's going on, and how I can save everyone!
Player: Save everyone?
Face Karish.png: Yes! Because that's what a HERO does!
Face Karish.png: But it's hard to be a hero when so many people in town are looking for me! So it's a good thing that I found someone as capable as you.
Player: How does the whirlpool factor in to all of this?
Face Karish.png:
Player: Darkness, you say?
Face Karish.png: Yeah, that's right. I don't know what they're doing in there, but it isn't good. Then tentacle-face starts advising the Boss, then the hats... and the whirlpool. I think you know how it goes from there.
Tentacle-face seemed like he was unhappy the whirlpool appeared, though. I don't think he knew why it happened, or what caused it. Then he made going near it off limits to everyone - that's how I knew it was worth checking out.
Player: Well, actually...
'You recount to Karish how a cloud of darkness enveloped your train, on the day you arrived in Sun Haven. His eyes widen as you go over the events that lead to the looming darkness on Sun Haven's border.'
Face Karish.png: No way! That's interesting!! Now I really gotta know more, [Player]! But I need your help. You're with me, right? Good!
There are other people in town who haven't put the slime hats on. I need you to go and question them for me, so we can try getting to the bottom of this mystery. Got that, [Player]? I'm sending you on a fact-finding mission!
Player: Got it!
Face Karish.png: That's AWESOME, [Player]! Alright, here's a list of of people to talk to. Go out and see what they know, okay?
The first person is the Tavern Keeper at the Tavern in Town Square!
Player: That sounds boring. Can't I fight a cool monster instead?
Face Karish.png: I LOVE YOUR CONFIDENCE! No doubt we're going to fight a monster soon enough, but right now we need information! Alright, here's a list of of people to talk to. Go out and see what they know, okay?
The first person is the Tavern Keeper at the Tavern in Town Square!

After the cutscene, if the player tries to speak with Karish, he says:

Face Karish.png:"Alright, [Player]! Go and talk to each of the people on the list I gave you! Remember, the first person is the tavern keeper at the tavern in town square!"

If the player tries to re-enter the hideout before finishing the quest the following error message occurs:

❝ I shouldn't bother Karish right now until I've completed my task. ❞

Questions...

Leave the secret hideout area and go back into the city then head north to the tavern. Once inside speak with the lobster amari behind the bar. Upon speaking with him, he says:

Face Willie.png:"Hey, you're the new face in town. I got plenty of drinks, but nothing that would go through that goofy helmet of yours...
Huh? The hats? Yeah, those are real weird. A bunch of my regulars started wearin' them, and now it's like they aren't themselves no more. They don't tell jokes, or drink bitterbrine or any of the stuff they used to do.
It made me think twice about wearing one, myself. But the guards keep showin' up, wondering when I'm going to join the craze..."

That is all the information the barkeep is going to give the player, so the player decides they need to find "That idiot who pretends to be a guard". Head South and at the mermaid and shark statue head east. Go through the tunnels, and speak with the "guard" who is between two sets of glass tube walkways.

After speaking with the guard, head west back to the mermaid and shark statue to speak with Larry the starfish.

Return to Karish in his hide out on the South-Western part of town.
