Herman appears on the Player's Farm on Day 15 of Summer. It will randomly spray ink puddles across the player's farm. Watering on the ink puddles will cause it to disappear.
When the boss is spawned, Peter will arrive at the beach to the South of farm. In order to defeat the boss, the player should talk to Peter. Then Peter will take the player to a special platform, where the Bomb Fish can be fished. 40 of them are required in order to defeat the boss. Doing so will rewards the player with a chest containing Hermy.

Trivia
- Herman may be named after Herman Melville, author of Moby Dick. This is further cemented by the fact that Peter views Herman as his mortal enemy, whom he has been hunting for a long time, just like Ahab is hunting Moby Dick.
